Carbon Monoxide Detectors Mandated by July 1, 2011

 

BILL:                                       Senate Bill 183

RULING:                               Homeowners must install or plug in carbon monoxide detectors

EFFECTIVE DATE:              January 1, 2011

Overview

SB 183 requires a carbon monoxide detection device to be installed in any existing dwelling “intended for human occupancy” that has a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.

These devises must be installed in existing single-family dwellings on or before July 1, 2011 and in all other dwellings on or before January 1, 2013.

Effective Dates

  • January 1, 2011 for revised Transfer Disclosure Statement (TDS)
  • July 1, 2011 for installation in single family dwellings
  • January 1, 2013 for installation in other existing dwellings

For Agents

This new law eliminates the need for a separate smoke detector and water-heater bracing (WHSD) compliance forms when a seller uses the Transfer Disclosure Statement (TDS).
